What is the difference between key cards, fobs and biometric access?

Cards and fobs work the same way, they carry a credential that a reader recognises at the door. Cards are easy to replace. Fobs hold up better in tougher environments. Biometric systems remove the credential entirely, no card to lose, share or forget. The right choice depends on your security requirements, how many people you are managing, and how you want day-to-day administration to work. We will give you a recommendation based on your actual situation.

Can access control work with our CCTV?

Yes, and it should. When the two systems are linked you can pull footage tied to an exact access event, see who badged in alongside the camera view, and get alerts when a door is held open or forced. We design these integrations properly from the start. Systems bolted together after the fact rarely work as well as they should.

How do you manage contractors and visitors?

Most platforms we install include visitor and contractor management. Temporary credentials, time-limited access to specific areas, and a full audit trail of where they went and when. If you are still handing out physical keys to contractors, that is a problem we can fix. You will also stop paying a locksmith every time someone does not hand one back.

What happens to access control if the power goes out?

It depends on how the system is designed, which is a decision we make with you before installation. Doors can be configured to fail safe (unlock during a power failure) or fail secure (stay locked). Both are valid depending on the nature of the space and your safety requirements. We work this out at the design stage. It should not be a surprise after the fact.

Is Powercoms licensed to install security systems?

Yes. We hold a PSPLA company licence, number 15-024822, covering both security consultant and security technician work, and we've held it since 2015. In New Zealand anyone installing security systems commercially has to be licensed, so it's worth asking whoever you're talking to for their number. You can check ours on the government's public register in about thirty seconds.
